It's all in your technique

It's past 2:30 am... I'm in Singapore after finishing my packing, after doing a corporate gig over here, my 3rd private gig since giving birth.

No, it wasn't my best performance... the first two went off without a vocal hitch, but this one was a bit more difficult.  For some reason things felt tight vocally, not as loose as I'm used to.  Perhaps my body is still in a sort of "adjustment period," and that I should give myself some time (and a tune up from my voice teacher) before things return to a more consistent, longer lasting normal.

I guess I just have this personal standard or benchmark that I try to hit whenever I'm doing a show... tonight's preparation wasn't any different from other nights of getting ready, so I know it wasn't anything external.  It just could be internal... maybe I should have eaten my meal closer to show time... maybe I should have warmed up later... maybe I didn't hydrate enough... yadda yadda yadda...

I don't know... maybe I'm just setting my own personal expectations high.

Then again... I always should!  I should always strive to be as perfect as possible... I should always try to hit my benchmark... always do the best I can on any given night.  Last night, I tried the best I could.  And yeah, I should be happy with that.  I really should.

Oh whatever... there will be many other gigs and many other shows... every one an attempt at hitting that sweet spot.  I'll have a few bad days, but most of the time, ahhhhhhhh success.

Uhm, when I have to do even just a number (which happens rarely), I refrain from eating. The full feeling adds to the stage fright. I feel like it hampers my breathing. Does eating closer to showtime help you perform better? In what way?

Give yourself a break, my dear! As you "wrote" yourself, your body is still in the adjustment period and perhaps it still is. But I'm sure you still sang beautifully :)

I normally eat 2 hours or so before a show... my last meal before the gig was 6 hours prior, so that probably contributed to how I sang. Eating a meal too close to showtime makes me feel sluggish and tired, not to mention heavy and bloated.

I remember your Cerritos concert last year. You recovered quite well after Love Look Away......you just had the little peanut then....that was some major adjustments you were going Thur then:-) What songs did you sing at the Singapore gig?

I always have issues with feeling tight in my throat, particularly as I'm refining my mix. It gets too light sometimes and I always try to push harder. Any advice on how to avoid that?

Well, at least I now know I'm actually doing the right thing by avoiding eating too close to "showtime". That happened to me at the last Christmas party and I made a mess out of the only song number I had to do. That was embarassing!!!!

Thanks for the reply, Lea :)

ate Lea, don't be too hard on yourself. It is perfectly alright to have some off days, personally and professionally. Cheer up! We have no doubt the show still turned out to be a classy gig =).

Isn't it hard to maintain such high standards for such a long time?

it is these simple mistakes that make us strive to become better, if not perfect, persons. i'm sure you'll do better next time. and if ever you do an "underwhelming" performance next time, i won't cease to be a fan. :-)
