Black Saturday, Part Deux

Well, the throat is still feeling pretty bad... I'm taking the entire day off.  Thank God I have wonderful understudies into whose capable hands Fantine is (and has been) well taken care of.  I only feel bad for the people that come to the show to see me... hopefully they decide to come back when I'm back in the swing of things.

So, I'm occupying myself with some baby time and The Masters golf tournament on TV.  Tiger Woods is making a move toward the top of the leaderboard, which makes me very happy.  I'm also downing some hot soup and getting a lot of sleep and rest.  One of my friends has already scolded me, telling me to SLEEP EARLIER.  I should, really... I tend to push my body into the dead of night and not give myself enough rest time for the next day.  It's also difficult, what with the 2 am garbage retrieval across the street some days of the week, so I'm having my windows done to soundproof the apartment.  Something I should have had done a long, long time ago.

That's it from here for now... I'm now curious, what are you guys doing to prepare for Easter?  Egg hunts?  Visits to family and friends?  A beautiful and delicious dinner?  Do tell, I'd love to hear your traditions.

Get lots of rest.

For Easter - typically, we just have a small get together within the immediate family. But, if the relatives are in the mood, we have a bigger get together starting with an early mass at the local church followed by a huge lunch consisting of roast butterflied lamb with rosemary, garlic, and pearl onions (alternate: pork and chicken adobo), lechong manok with tamarind leaves, sopas, escabeche (fish), pipiitan (chicken soup with ground roasted peanuts and that spice that makes the broth red) and passion fruit ricotta torte for dessert (from a local french pastry shop). After lunch, the kids head out to the yard for the easter egg hunt. The plastic eggs are filled with either money or candies followed by a game with prizes (toys). The host will have games for the adults in the late afternoon...games that have something to do with eggs and chocolate. If there's room, we have a light dinner then karaoke at the patio.

I hope you can take Nic out for her first egg hunt. Maybe the coop will have something in the building or by the park close by.

Hi Lea - Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I hope the rest you're getting today and the hot soup will do the trick. Fletch's list of all those yummy foods got me really hungry!

Easter is definitely a big family event! Not exactly my relatives, but my bestfriend's immediate family members and extended relatives of 95 (!) and counting. I come from a small family and my relatives are all spread out in the US, so I have been adopted into my friend's clan and we usually go to the park and hold a potluck picnic. After mass (no, we don't go as a big group to one church), we usually head out to whichever park has been chosen for the year and hang out there for the rest of the day. We hold the egg hunting for the kids by age (as there are so many of them!) as well as for the ladies and gents. It's always fun to see the Dads go egg-hunting as this is quite unusual, but it's always a lot of fun. When we see other kids at the park watching us play and their moms (or dads) allow them to join us, we usually have them join in the egg-hunt and give them prizes as well.

I hope Nic gets to have her share of colorful eggs tomorrow. Happy Easter to you and your family, Lea!

Sorry you're not feeling well Some rest should do you some good. Feel better!

Unfortunately, for the past two years, we haven't been able to celebrate Easter like we used to. Tomorrow I'll be driving 5 hours back to school and my mom will be working. Usually we color eggs and have an egg hunt, then go to my tita's house to eat and get together.

Hope your daughter enjoys her Easter! Best to you and your family!

Lea, maybe the Divine is trying to tell you something. Great thing you "re-realized" the sacredness and the meaning of commemoration/celebration of these events.

More epiphanies from you...

Im sorry to hear about you're not feeling better. Hope you get better tomorrow. Tomorrow is fun day! We're having a family get together tomorrow, then have the Easter Egg Hunt at 4 pm, and introduce it to some newcomer kids! As for us adults! YES! It's mahjong time! Living in Vegas, mahjong is better as you get to hold on to your dinero longer than the hungry Video Poker machines!!! Have a good Happy Easter and best to your family!

Missing the halo-halo and pancit palabok back home! I'm taking a day off from writing my thesis (I missed the deadline already) to see some friends at this Student Residence here in Oslo called Kringsja. Nothing special, just tea and chat. There's a forecast of light snow today (still!) but my friend said at least it’s not icy – she knows how the icy paths have kept me from visiting before. It was sunny last week and at first we thought of going to the lake today (still half-frozen, just to hunt for frozen ducks harhar) till we heard about the weather forecast. I love that lake – I call it My Lake Sognsvann, and Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder always mentioned it in his stories.
Sorry I'm just being dreamy again.
Anyway, Happy Easter again dear Lea! It’s already frustrating to have a sore throat for us whose profession is not, err, well, singing, so it must be doubly frustrating for you, so have some rest!

First of all, Happy Easter!!! Second, please get well soon!! Have you had your salabat yet? I know you mentioned some time ago that that helps a not-so-good-feeling throat.

For Easter, when my family was still together (unfortunately, us kids had to grow up and move away. it's so sad not being with the entire family.), we'd hear mass in the morning, eat outside for lunch, go back home and color eggs, then my mom would hide them all over the front and back yards. Yup, we'd still have Easter egg hunts even when we're already in our 20s, but it's fun. Whoever, found the most eggs wins a prize of $20 and/or a chocolate bunny. hehe Whatever's left of the day, we'd spend among ourselves just relaxing and being around each other. Quality family time. But since the next day is a school day, we'd also worry about getting our homework finished in time, which always ruins a good weekend. Now that I've started working at a hospital with long hours, my Holy Week wasn't spent the way I would have liked when I was with my family. It wasn't quiet or solemn like yours. It was long and hectic with patients complaining left and right. I'm afraid it'll only get worse when I earn that M.D.

Again, have a Blessed Easter!!!

heya, please take care of your lovely self!

Went to mass with my tita mila and i realized that i'd never been to easter sunday mass before...all these years i'd still be at the beach or up a mountain somewhere...and i got baptized again. These past two months has seen me separated from my wife, starting a new life, and surprisingly going back to church...seeking comfort and enlightenment in familiar places, and it's strange going to mass because i want to and not because i have to...i'm listening to every word, and not falling asleep during the gospel and the sermon...i'm crying everytime we raise our voices in song...and the best part of all this is i'm remembering back to my childhood, back when my family was complete and we went together every sunday...i could smell my dad's aftershave...i could hear my sisters kibitzing...and i could almost feel my mom's abanico making paypay beside me...i never thought that going to mass would be like coming home.

and now, truly excellent things are happening to me...i've got a good job...i'm writing again...i'm singing again...i'll be acting again...and i'm in love.

I hope you're feeling better. Do take care of yourself!

You didn't quite ask this, but I'll adapt the question to my circumstances and tell you that I observed Passover--despite my atheism--by holding a small Seder for some philosophy colleagues of mine (none of us serious Jews). It was actually a remarkably positive experience--there is something special in chanting those ancient words, and this is the one religious holiday whose story is deeply meaningful to me, in which is fulfilled what I find the most beautiful commandment in Scripture: "And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying, It is because of that which the Lord did for me when I came forth out of Egypt." And I ate matzo for eight days and was scarcely bothered.

Hello Lea...
It's been a while since I last checked out your site. It's quite amazing how such a star like you would be interested on how we spend our holy week...
well, here goes...
i used to go EVERY YEAR with family to the beach, Subic, Zambales, La Union or way back in Baguio.
This year, although I still spent it with cousins, it was alittle different for me...
My parents weren't with me... first time in 26 years! :o|
They flew to the US as immigrants last March 25...
Easter is usually celebrated by joining the "SALUBONG" but not this year :-s

anyway, my cuzns & i went to the BEACH *what else to do* but this time it's down south... to Malapascua, Cebu! The place was great ... there weren't a lot of people
uinlike maybe for Bora or Galera...

nywei... it's nice to your your feelin much better NOW... :p
