Nokia N95 8GB

Rating:★★★★
Category:Computers & Electronics
Product Type: Cell-phones
Manufacturer:  Nokia
My cellphone provider called a few weeks ago to notify me that I qualified for a free phone, and the lovely operator gave me a list to choose from: the Nokia N95 8GB, the Nokia E90 and a new Sony Ericsson (I couldn't remember the model number). I chose the new N95. I told my husband about the offer, and he was excited for me (techie that he is). I then started poring over whatever I could find: official reviews and user opinions alike.

The phone was delivered yesterday... and I was floored.

First, the feel in the hand is one that is rich... not at all plasticky or flimsy. However, taking the battery out when I need to is a little difficult... I need an actual tool to remove it.

Now, turning it on.

The phone itself is very responsive. My previous Nokia was an N73, and I found that to be sluggish and slow at every turn, so I lent that to my mother who really didn't need any of the fancy features. Worked for her just fine, but not for me.

The best part of the phone for me is its Mac syncability. It syncs beautifully with iSync (I now use iCal and Address Book because of this) and -- thanks to Nokia Multimedia Transfer -- I can also sync photos and music directly from iTunes and iPhoto. Suhweet!

One last great application I found is a beta program called Conversation. As a former Treo user I really liked threaded SMS messages (or chats), and Conversation allows me to organize my text messages into threads that make my SMS chats easy to follow. Awesome!!!

My other complaint has to do with the built-in media player (slide the phone down instead of up, and you expose special buttons to play your multimedia content). The screen orientation goes from portrait to landscape, but once you slide the phone back into neutral, the orientation doesn't change. Hopefully Nokia will find a way to fix it, but it's a really minor thing compared to the great things I get out of the phone.

I... love... this... phone. Everything I want in a relatively light device. Let's see how long it'll take before I run it into the ground.

Very nice. What happened to your red blackberry? For a Mac user, I'm sure you have the iPhone na, right?

Lea Salonga said...

Nope, I don't. Rob does though. I didn't want to get one if I couldn't copy and paste texts and send/receive multimedia messages. At least now you can forward and send to multiple recipients, but it's not enough for me. I have a red Treo, and it's still there... I can use it as my US phone. The Nokia is locked kasi to my local provider eh.

Get Bluephone Elite for the Mac. It's what I use to text and it's the best money I've ever spent on software.

Oh! And Salling Clicker too! Both excellent applications and fully compatible, at least with my Nokia E61i.

wow! I've been nagging my mom to buy me this phone! hehehe! I'm after the 5MP camera, so I'm also considering the Sony Ericsson K850i. ^_^ This is a very good phone though, my friend has it and it looks very sexy. =P

Wow, I didn't know that you can't copy/paste texts & send/receive multimedia messages in an iPhone. Good thing you said that since I was planning on getting one for a gift.

On your Treo, I thought it was a Blackerry like Victor's. I guess Treo and Blackberry are quite similar. But when you get back to the States, you should check out the new Blackpearl from Blackberry....mura pa...$99 with rebate. Does everything you want and with mp3/video player, movie camera, GPS, tv, etc. Great for synching with your calendar via bluetooth.

A must-have feature for me if I buy a cellphone (I also get free phones from my service provider but still, I ask for this feature from the choices they offer). Texting is easier and faster.

I think I'll wait for the next gen iPhone. As you can tell, I've got memory issues. I can't seem to give up my 80GB iPod video, and I don't wan't to go do down to an iPhone that only offers up to 16GB. I like having the memory on my iPod, I have videos and movies loaded there. The kids use it when we're at the grocery and it keeps them busy. Even the 32GB iPod Touch sounds tempting but.....patience is a virtue. Or is it good things come to those who wait?

Tiffany Guevarra said...

wow! i wanted to get that phone but we heard some complaints form N95 users that the battery life is too short..like it drains after 8 hours? is it true?

Brad Patterson said...

Urrrrghhhh! I would like to get a new cell phone now, and the N95 looks pretty darn good. But I like some of the features of the N96 even better. I hate to wait six months to get one. I wish they wouldn't announce products so far in advance of release.

I know. I know. Buy an N95 now and buy an N96 in six months. Just hate to spend the money that way.

Decisions, decisions!!!

I got this one for myself too. I see little of it as Leah has claimed it from me since she can snap a 5MP picture at anytime or capture video!!!!!!!!! Yes, it is a great phone, which gets my email, internet, takes great pics, videos and can watch live TV (I sync'd it with my slingbox) on from anywhere in the world!

The first reviews for the N95 were awful that's why I didn't get it, but I heard that the new N95s are better now and much more improved from the comments of the first N95 (the 2Gb model). I still desire this phone mainly because of the 5Mp camera and the multi-media features. And now since you said it syncs beautifully with a mac, I desire this even more now.

As for the N96... All I can say is Free phone way better :D I just got an relatively new Free N80 and I'm so happy with it (not just because of its features but because it's free. and I like free useful stuff)

I hope the N95 doesn't feel rickety after a few months of use. Do update us if it does!

i have the nokia n95 too. I love it!! I dropped mine twice and it didn't get scratched at all. It still looks brand new. :D :D :D And I can always change the cover/housing if it gets scratched coz I'm so clumsy... Also, nothing can beat the camera of this phone.

Im wondering if the nokia 5800 xpressmusic is gonna be better...
