Back to Black

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Music
Genre: R&B
Artist:Amy Winehouse
I approached this album with apprehension (I mean, she's been on the news for matters that have nothing to do with music), and OH MY GOD!!! Her album is absolutely fantastic! She brings us back to the days of Motown with her sound as well as that beehive and painted eyeliner. Her voice is steeped in the 1960s. Sometimes it's as if I'm listening to Martha and the Vandellas.

She deserved every single Grammy she got, her detractors be damned. If you haven't yet, get yourself a copy.

No, I'm not glorifying her lifestyle... only her music, which is excellent. Fantastic, fantastic music.

It's good, isn't it? I, myself, think the album is fantastic also. She's got a knack for music and her voice just stands out from everyone else.

I agree! she maybe a crackhead but this album is so good. check her duet with mutya buena (former sugababes) for B-Boy.

Really?! Ok ok eto na ako. I'll get a copy. Parang ayoko rin dahil sa lahat ng personal bad press. I was lost in the publicity spin and couldn't decide if the grammy's were just part of the whole winehouse fad. Thanks for posting this.

my favorite track is "You Know I'm No Good"...first heard it during Mad Men promos on AMC, it was my summer 2007 song. couldnt get enough of it. great talent, too bad she's wasting it...

I recognized him by the escalators... such a beautiful little boy.

She is really great. Really great. But i hope somebody save her from where she is now otherwise her talent might end up going to waste. Check out her pic in bryanboy's blog here: http://www.bryanboy.com/bryanboy_le_superstar_fab/2008/03/amy-winehouses.html

Like your little girl. You have an amazing memory!

Lea Salonga said...

Ay sus... he's a carbon copy of you! He was easy to spot!

Lea Salonga said...

I know... but she's supposedly been in rehab and is getting her life back together. Hopefully that's true, I'd love for her to make more and more music for years to come.

How are you? And where are you? I'm heading to LA at the end of April, would be nice to catch up.

doing good, still in LA running around like a madman :P drop me a line when you're in town!

Ha ha! If your frighteningly amazing memory recalls my brother Rafa, that's who Alec is a carbon copy of.

Lea Salonga said...

Ohhhhhhh yes, I do remember Rafa... but no. Alec actually reminds me of Katrina, a little bit.

If you like her, check out her backup band, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Her impetigo is just so yucky to look at. Check her pics at TMZ.com. I'm not surprised that she got impetigo since historically Brits are known for not taking a bath everyday and she looked so unkempt.

was just reading... you know the alunans pala. they're close family friends of my tita, so we see them at parties sometimes. those alunan sisters are all so pretty.

Hope she gets better from her skin disease though. She looks kinda scary nowadays.

Lea Salonga said...

Oh yehz, have known them since we were all kids. I don't think Alexi was even born when I met the older ones. Katrina was around 9 or 10, Barni was 8 when we met.

Lea Salonga said...

Will do! See you soon then!

tin samson said...

oh cool! how do you know them? you're closest to barni? funny pa, her husband was my teacher in ateneo for a comm elective one sem, hahahaha. pero he didn't know me. i just really talk to alexi when we see each other.

Lea Salonga said...

Way back when, I was probably closer to Katrina because we were the same age. And Barni knows a lot of the same people I know thanks to her getting involved with Rep.

tin samson said...

ahhh, i see. i didn't know she was into theatre. then again, i don't really know much about her, haha.

Hi Lea! I trust you so I'll buy the album. Sincerely, I love your voice more and I never missed any single concert you've made. I like all your songs and your voice, superb!!!

Well, many musicians and singers throughout history have been both extremely talented and extremely self destructive. It seems to be an inclination to pursue the dizzy limit of their humanity and flawed selves that makes them pursue both artistic excellence and toy around with substance abuse and slow death by hedonism.

I suppose I'll try to listen to Amy Winehouse at some point if not outrightly buy her album, since you gave it such a rave review. As to buying it, well, I've got the Evita soundtrack with Madonna on it as my key priority right now. Once I get Evita, life can end for all I care, I will be content.

I totally agree, you have to download the iTunes festival live album... its beyond amazing!

omigosh i just saw this now and got so excited because I AM SUCH A BIG AMY WINEHOUSE FAN. i watched a video of her london concert, out on dvd. she's really... sabaw in between songs. like she'll say things such as, "sorry my voice is fucked up... fucked up... ya'll can have your money back... or i'll just kiss you. on the cheek. because my husband is there." (then she'll sniff or drink alcohol) i love her first album, Frank, too. on what it seems to be permanent repeat is "will you still love me tomorrow?" from the bridget jones soundtrack.
